Just three days after tying the knot and heading back home to Charleston from Greenville, Jamie had an epiphany. It was at that time she decided her beautiful body she's worked so hard to maintain over the years was forever memorialized in wedding photos and she would now shift to a diet consisting mostly of lard, flour, and buttermilk.
I said yes dear I support you and pulled up a google search for the best biscuits in town. Being in the South, finding biscuits in South Carolina is like finding water on an island. But, one place stood out above the rest, with a 5.0 rating on Yelp and over 300 reviews. Typically, numbers don't lie, so we headed over to Maple Street Biscuit Company to either confirm Yelp's loyal patronage or uncover a company's solicitation scheme to inflate their rating.
It turns out that Maple Street Biscuit Company is a regional-like chain and has locations in AL, GA, FL, NC, SC, TN and TX. Here is my review of the downtown Greenville, SC location.
Pros
Employees - They were all nice as hell. The man at the front, I believe he was a manager, was personal and engaging to every person that walked through the door.
Unlimited Coffee - You don't see this much any more in a world filled with $7 eight oz lattes. House coffee was unlimited and serve yourself. Coffee is cheap and some people like myself appreciated more than a cup or three. That's a win/win.
Convenience - You order at the counter, find a seat, then they call you up when your order is ready (less than five minutes). Not everyone has time or wants to sit down for a served breakfast. So, if you are short on time you can still be long on biscuits.
Free - When I went to the counter to pick up my order, I was surprised at the two extra biscuits sitting on my tray. The lady said first time customers get two free cinnamon biscuits. Word.
Food - This list is not in order of importance, I'm merely saving the best for last. Take a look at this: Maple Street Biscuit Menu. As you can, they have a lot of variety. Classic options like my order, the Five (chicken breast, bacon, cheddar, and sausage gravy ), or more sophisticated options like Jamie's Squawking Goat (chicken breast, fried goat cheese medallion and house-made pepper jelly). My chicken was properly cooked and not dry, the gravy was standard but with a little added spice, and the bacon was perfectly cooked. I'll let the picture of Jamie's plate below speak for her on this review. Jamie doesn't always finish meals, but when she does, she's prefers sausage gravy.
Cons
1. arteriosclerosis
2. heart disease
3. stroke
The South hasn't always gotten it right (i.e. War), but they make a darn good biscuit. And Maple Street Biscuit company gets another 5-star review from this midwestern Ohio guy and his beautiful Northeastern Massachusetts wife.
