Yes, Mellow Mushroom is a chain but it’s worth blogging about because 1) decent pizza is hard to come by in the South and 2) Mellow has a strong Charleston presence with locations in West Ashley, downtown Charleston, and Mount Pleasant.
Jamie and I met Kristen on a Tuesday for trivia night at the Avondale location and ordered a Margharita with extra garlic (because it’s what Jamie does). Mellow’s crusts are unique and have an almost cornmealish taste, the red sauce is average, and the tomatoes tasted fresh. I think Jamie’s 6.5/10 rating was pretty spot on.
The first restaurant popped up in Atlanta in 1974 and the 1970’s psychedelic, hippy-like theme is still going strong. Kristen was convinced that the rainbow-colored goat on the wall was pulling a Mona Lisa on her all night.
They have a solid craft beer selection at reasonable prices ($4-$6). They also have $2 PBR and Tecate cans and a $3 draft beer of the month. I’d recommend Mellow Mushroom to anyone looking for a quick and casual pizza and beer night.
