There’s an old saying in Tennesee, I know it's in Texas... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQ6N-sb7SVQ

No, the other one, “Everything is bigger in Texas”. It applies not only to hats, ranches, and high school football, but also tater tots. As proof, I submit to you Jay Creech's smile while taking on a potato farm’s worth of tater tots at No Frills Grill in Burleson. Jay won the battle but No Frills eventually won the war by inducing Jay’s food coma and subsequent early exit on Saturday.

My three-day trip to Fort Worth, TX was astonishingly intense for the time spent, with both OSUs getting bounced early in the tourney. Enough about that. Let's focus on the positives in the form of a few food highlights. Like the “Brisket Biscuit” at Derek Allen’s BBQ. The only thing that could make this sandwich more Texan is if it was wearing a pair of Luccheses and a Stetson. This was Matt and I’s first stop on Saturday morning, right in the Magnolia part of town. The sandwich had egg, cheese, hash brown, and perfectly cooked brisket, all between a light biscuit with a side of green chile sauce. I thought it was delicious and was ready to move on to our day drinking appointment, but Matt’s hunger couldn’t be contained by “not enough food for $7.50”.

So, we ventured down to Brewed for Matt’s second breakfast. Brewed is a hipster spot with craft cocktails and a pretty diverse menu.

Matt ordered a chicken biscuit, which he liked, but the drinks are where we need to focus our attention. Matt started with and wasn’t overly impressed by the Cowboy Coffee (coffee, bourbon, cream sugar). But hell, just having that on the menu gets my respect. I started with the Brunchtime Boilermaker and it will go down as one of the greatest drinks of my life. If you’re asking how to make an imperial stout even better, I think I’m safe to speak on behalf of Brewed when I say you add coffee infused moonshine, duh. I’ve never heard of such a drink but the ingredients were synergistic and their combination a work of art. Second course was a Blistered Jalapeno Peach Margarita for me and a Bloody for Matt. Again, I was impressed and left wanting more. Are all the drinks on this menu this excellent? But, we had a long day ahead of us and needed to switch to light beer rather than continuing down what was likely the most slippery of slopes. So, we left.

Let’s fast forward to Sunday after golf. Jay left his degenerate brother and friend to fend for ourselves at the Flying Saucer, while he instead went to be a good husband. Anyone who knows Jay will understand that turning down Saucer beers shows his degree of love for Brooke. I told this to Jamie and her response was “I want to marry Jay”.

The Tax Boys were in a need of a pick me up. Luckily for us, Amanda had our back and delivered that pick me up in the form of sunshine, cold beer, and Guy Clark. Pretty soon, we were down the road in a cloud of smoke to some beers Amanda bought bought bought….at Maggie's in Magnolia. Maggie's is a newer, happening spot, with a ton of outdoor seating and a big screen television. The staff was on point with refills at about the two sips of beer left mark and the burger was solid. My only regret was not getting the double patty.

Thank you Matt and Amanda for being such gracious hosts. Thank you Jay, Danny, Don, and Amy for making losses more manageable.
